This Video Conferencing FAQ has been composed by the team at Lifesize to help clarify some of the most common questions surrounding video conferencing, so you can stop scratching your head!
Q. How is the picture quality? Will it distract from my meeting?
The picture quality of video conferencing varies greatly among services. The free and consumer focused services can often produce poor picture quality, pixilation and bandwidth hiccups, which can look unprofessional and take away from the productivity of meetings. The enterprise grade services on the other hand – such as Lifesize Cloud – offer exceptional HD picture quality, with the added benefit of greater image stability. Furthermore, you will benefit from improved audio quality that makes you feel like you are in the room with your team, even when you are thousands of miles apart. For the best results with Lifesize Cloud, a 1.2Mbps bandwidth is required for 1080p30 quality, or 1.7Mbps for 1080p60.
Q. Will I be able to show the other person what’s on my screen, share documents with them or edit documents in real time?
Sharing your screen with your colleagues and clients is a fundamental part of the Lifesize Cloud experience. The ability to instantly share and edit what you are working on makes the Cloud a great tool for collaboration; streamlining meetings, training seminars and more. This ability ensures your teams can always operate at full efficiency wherever, whenever, on any device.
Q. Can I bring more than one person into a call at the same time?
Lifesize Cloud has the ability to support up to 50 different accounts simultaneously, and anyone can be invited at the touch of a button. This ensures that if the topic changes, and you need to involve a subject matter expert, this can be done instantly, removing typical barriers to communication. Depending on your preferences, there are a range of layout options for how you want to view the group as it grows.
Q. Can I use dual monitors?
Dual monitors are supported with both the Lifesize® Icon 600™ and Lifesize® Icon 800™, ensuring that you can view a full screen presentation on one monitor whilst using the other to continue the conversation. This is a great tool for larger meetings where there are numerous participants, as it allows the callers to remain clearly in view whilst you work on important documents. Furthermore, the desktop app for Mac® and PC and the WebRTC web app also support dual displays. The Lifesize® Icon 400™ and Lifesize® Icon Flex™ are designed for smaller meetings and therefore only support a single display.
Q. Can I video call people outside of my organisation?
Every Lifesize Cloud user can send unlimited guest invites, through the inbuilt app Invite menu, or alternatively through Microsoft® Outlook® add-in or a Google Calendar™ extension. Furthermore, every Lifesize Cloud account owner can add guests into their directory and call them directly. This system has been designed to make it as seamless as possible to contact anyone, in or out of your organisation in order to streamline meetings.
Q. What kind of camera should I use?
For personal one-on-one meetings, webcams and the built in laptop/monitor cameras work brilliantly with Lifesize Cloud. For larger meetings that require additional participants, better picture quality and a wider Field of View, the Lifesize Icon range have been designed specifically to cater to a range of requirements, from small huddle rooms to larger auditorium spaces. Q. Can I switch between seeing a presentation and seeing people in a video meeting?
The presentation icon slider allows you to easily toggle between screen sharing modes. It gives you control over what you see, how large the presentation is and how small the participants are viewed.
Q. What’s the difference between web conferencing and video conferencing?
Web and video conferencing solutions have both been designed to create engaging and productive multi-way communication experiences. Web conferencing is suitable for broadcasting a single speaker to a larger audience, however video conferencing has far greater functionality, better image quality, stability and better supports an open dialogue between participants.
Q. How is international calling handled?
With Lifesize Cloud, the only consideration to international calling you need to think about is the time difference! As the call is connected over the internet, there is no additional costs for worldwide calls, and this goes for both video and audio calls. Furthermore, we have toll-free numbers in over 50 countries for International audio conferencing.
Q. How is the interoperability between Lifesize Cloud and Microsoft® Lync®?
As our customers are at the centre of everything we do, and we focus on the usability of our platform, we are pleased to provide total operability with Microsoft Lync (Skype for business). Lync callers can connect directly from within their own app without having to make a separate download. Lync users will receive an email invite from Lifesize Cloud, and simply accept this from within their web browser to launch the call; no PIN, no passwords, no searching for numbers – just a few clicks and you’re in!
Q. Is video conferencing secure?
Video conferencing security varies depending on the vendor. Lifesize cloud offers industry leading encryption and firewall traversal to ensure your meeting is only accessible by those invited, and not a third party. Read the Lifesize Cloud Security Overview
