North Bristol NHS Trust is regarded as one of the most innovative medical facilities in the UK, known for ground breaking work within neurosciences, plastics and burns, orthopaedics and renal care. Because the trust is so geographically dispersed, staff often travel long distances to provide care, as well as for weekly meetings with the commute taking up to half a day. Due to this, the Trust were eager to find a solution that could make better use of their employees’ time, reduce travel costs and provide a better work/life balance.
The Trust initially felt that video conferencing was an outdated solution, however they were open to exploring the technology to see how it had developed over the years. After initial impressions were positive and the Trust were surprised by the potential cost savings and ease of use, North Bristol NHS Trust implemented Lifesize across the organisation. The impact was immediate, with all staff meetings becoming more productive, with medical specialists being able to participate without the expense of travel and time. The end points were further used in surgical and consultative meetings, all-hands nurse meetings and medical case examinations.
As well as increased productivity, the Trust experienced a range of other benefits, including a £9,500 monthly savings from travel alone, a 3000kg carbon reduction over a 12 month period and improved employee satisfaction.
“The money saved on staff time and travel from using LifeSize in a single meeting room is nearly enough to pay for an entire room system,” said Martin Bell, director of assurance.
Due to the success of the implementation, the Trust intends to expand its’ use of video conferencing, focusing on clinical applications. An example of this is using video during a surgery to collaborate with medical experts around the world.
“The opportunities to create even more efficiencies through the use of LifeSize video communications solutions are huge,” concluded Bell. “Further implementations will help us reach economic and environmental targets, increase staff morale and provide even better care to patients. Ultimately, the NHS is a people-focused organisation, and so LifeSize video communications will continue to maintain that critical face-to-face interaction.”
